Health Unit
Preventive Health Care on Wheels
| The VNASI Mobile Health Unit provides
health promotion, education, immunization, screening and referral services to more than
10,000 Staten Island residents each year. The Mobile Health
Unit travels across Staten Island, visiting housing projects, senior centers,
supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, shopping centers, post offices, parks, churches,
synagogues and
elementary schools. |

|
Health History Questionnaires are administered at these sites by
members of the VNASI clinical staff. After screening and testing, individuals who are
found to be at risk are referred to physicians or local clinics.
Videos on various health topics such as nutrition, medication administration, and self
esteem are presented; counseling and information about maintaining good health practices
is provided, and women are offered the opportunity to learn the self breast examination.
The Mobile Health Unit also facilitates the success of the VNASI Community Flu/Pneumonia Prevention
Campaign, providing free or low cost flu and pneumonia immunizations to more than
6,000 individuals.
